Are You An Audiophile?
Can you hear the actual difference when an equalizer is modified? Can you hear the symbol in the left front channel separately from the rest of the music and truly enjoy its pristine clarity and perfect tone?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, then the best is all you should ever settle for when it comes to your home theatre.
What we are doing today is determining if the OPPO UDP 205 4k BluRay player qualifies to be labelled as the best.
The OPPO UDP 205 Review
Before we get started on performance, let’s take a look at how this machine will integrate into your current setup.
First of all, you will want to know whether the rest of your system supports balanced stereo signals over XLR.
The OPPO 205 has balanced XLR stereo outputs, which, if you didn’t already know, duplicate the signal and send it twice, one inverted, then reintegrate them on the input of the next device. This effectively inverts any noise that was picked up by both signal wires and cancels it, leaving only the pure signal your device was supposed to receive.
This being said, if your receiving device (pre-amp) does not have balanced XLR inputs to send your balanced signal to, it will not cancel the noise and will simply use whatever signal is brought by the cable.
Face it, if you are buying the best, you want its full potential to be realized.
The Power of Light
Alternatively, if noise is your focus, the OPPO 205 has an optical in and an optical out, which are effectively immune to EMF and radio interference, since they use light instead of electric signals.
This removes a huge part of the reason you would invest in an OPPO 205, however, as the signal being sent out is the digital signal directly from the disc or other media. You would be bypassing the onboard DACs (digital to analog converters), which are incredible on this machine.
Unless you already own a pre-amp that has exceptional DACs on board, use the balanced XLR signals from this OPPO.
Other Ways to Connect
This machine also comes with one HDMI in and two HDMI outs. One of the HDMI out ports will only send the audio signal, so if you are using the balanced XLR as we recommend, this port will be useless to you.
- RCA Stereo out
- Coax in / Coax out
- 7.1 / 5.1 / 2.0 channel decoded out
- RS232C in (±5V serial port)
- 2 USB rear 3.0 ports / 1 front USB port
- Gigabit LAN
- 802.11ac Wi-Fi
- USB DAC connector (you can use the onboard DACs to convert other signals, like a cable box or a computer)
The dual Sabre Pro Digital-to-Analog Converters used in the OPPO 205 are the product of ESS Technology and are strictly designed for the discerning ears of the audiophile.
This 8-channel 32-bit powerhouse (of which there are two onboard) boasts an incredible DNR (dynamic range) of up to 140dB while maintaining a THD+N (total harmonic distortion plus noise) of -122dB (the average THD+N in high-end gear is -107dB).
The Sabre Pro DAC has been developed for only the highest quality home audio equipment and studio level recording and playback equipment. The best, designed for the best.
Everything about this machine is solid. It is designed specifically to completely shield itself from noise, vibration and heat.
From it’s Toroidal power supply (which powers its analog circuitry and vastly reduces magnetic field) to it’s heavy-gauge feet that isolate the entire frame from outside vibration to the incredibly engineered passive cooling layout that allows for natural cooling at the most extreme use without the use of fans, everything about this player very clearly says “quality”.
The double-layered steel chassis creates a super rigid housing for the internal parts.
Typically, the highest quality electronics tend to be the heaviest and the OPPO 205 definitely follows that trend at 22 pounds (one of the heaviest BluRay players on the market).
What Can It Play?
In a word, everything.
This player has the capability to use the very newest and best AV technologies around, including the amazing and much too seldom used lossless audio formats, Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio. If you are looking for the audio track that was recorded in the studio, this thing can play it. With the newest firmware update, you can even take advantage of MQA (Master Quality Authenticated) encoding on your audio files, providing you with studio quality music from your digital sources.
When it comes to video, it is completely compatible with the absolute best, such as HDR, Wide Color Gamut and Dolby Vision.
You can put just about any kind of disc in this player, including:
- UHD BluRay
- 3D BluRay
- SACD (Super Audio CD)
We had the opportunity to borrow some time with one of these incredible machines to make our decision on whether the hype was warranted.
Every ounce of material used to create this BluRay Player was engineered toward quality and reproducing the best, truest sound possible.
We definitely give this player 5.0 / 5.0.
At this time, this model has been discontinued by OPPO, so you should definitely hurry to get yours today!
