Nintendo Switch Review – Should You Buy One in 2020?

The Nintendo Switch was released worldwide in 2017 and it is still regularly selling out in 2020. In fact, Nintendo had to double its production run for the Nintendo Switch just to keep up with the demand.

It’s popular for good reason too, the Nintendo Switch is a game-changer in comparison to its direct competition- the Xbox and the PlayStation.

The Nintendo Switch is different because it is a hybrid gaming console- you can either plug it into your TV just like a PlayStation or an Xbox or you can take it with you as a portable device just like the Nintendo Wii U or the nostalgic Nintendo Game Boy.

This makes it a really unique and versatile console as it combines the power of at-home gaming with the convenience of gaming on the go.

It can be played in 3 different modes and easily transitions between these modes, thus the name ‘Switch’.

TV mode

The Nintendo Switch can be easily connected to play on TV with the HDMI-connected charging dock provided. The Joy-Con controllers detach from the Nintendo Switch unit and turn into wireless controllers for the complete TV console gaming experience.

Tabletop mode

The Nintendo Switch unit comes with a kick-stand that can be used to let the LCD screen stand up on its own. The Joy-Con’s can then be detached to turn into wireless controllers for seamless game-play in Tabletop mode.

Handheld modes

The handheld mode in the Nintendo Switch is exactly like the Nintendo Wii U. The Joy-Con controllers snap on to the sides of the tablet making it a comfortable portable device. The display also has a multi-touch screen that uses Immersion’s haptic technology.

In terms of specifications, the Nintendo Switch may not be as powerful as it’s competitors the PlayStation and the Xbox, but it still packs a punch.

Screen and Resolution

The Switch unit itself is a tablet with a 720p, 6.2-inch LCD screen with multi-touch. But it can play games at 1080p resolution on console mode when connected to a TV.

Storage

It has 35 GB of internal storage but has a MicroSD card slot that will support microSDHC and microSDXC cards up to 2 TB.

Processing power

The Switch has a custom Nvidia Tegra processor running at 1 GHz, a quad-core CPU capable of 2 GHz and 4BG Ram with a bandwidth of 25.6 GB/s.

Sensors

There are 3 sensors on the console: a gyroscope to determine the direction, an accelerometer to determine the speed and one for brightness.

Audio

For audio, it has internal Stereo speakers, an HDMI connector in docked-mode compatible with 5.1ch Linear PCM output and a standard 3.5mm audio jack for headphone use.

Battery

It has a Lithium-ion 4310 mAh battery that charges via USB Type-C. The battery life of the console ranges from 2.5 hours to 6 hours of use depending on how intensive the game is, screen brightness, etc. It charges fully within 3 hours in sleep mode.

The battery itself is however non-replaceable. If the battery dies, Nintendo offers maintenance through customer support.

Wireless connectivity

The Switch has Bluetooth 4.1 and Wireless LAN communication.

Docking

The Nintendo Switch dock is made out of light plastic and has a compartment where the Nintendo Switch seamlessly fits into. The dock has an AC adapter port, an HDMI port and a USB port to connect to your TV.

Joy-Con controllers

The Joy-Con controllers that the Nintendo Switch comes with are also equipped with a host of special features.

They have a total playtime of 20 hours when fully charged and can be charged within 3.5 hours. They both have Bluetooth 3.0. The right Joy-Con also has NFC (near-field communication). They also include an accelerometer and a gyroscope, and the right has an infrared motion camera.

Another cool feature is the HD rumble which makes the controllers move or shake while playing games leading to a more realistic and immersive gaming experience.

The Joy-Con’s are easy to grip and come with straps that go over your wrists to ensure safety while playing motion-based games.

Overall, they are immensely versatile as the Joy-Con is detachable from the Switch unit and thus can be used to play in all 3 modes: TV mode, Tabletop mode, and Handheld mode. The two sides of the Joy-Con can also be connected together to create a single controller.

Build Quality and Design

In terms of build and design, the Nintendo Switch feels way more premium than the Nintendo Wii U. It’s much heavier at 297 g and both the Nintendo Switch and its Joy-Con controllers are composed of glass and metal.

The look and feel are of high quality and stylish.

Game Library

Nintendo games are iconic.

Nintendo has created some of the most famous gaming franchises in history and launched the Nintendo Switch with the highly popular The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

Nintendo is also home to games like Super Mario Odyssey, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Pokemon Sword and Shield, Luigi’s Mansion 3.

Nintendo’s new game Animal Crossing: New Horizons launched on March 20th, 2020 and was an immediate hit. It sold 13.4 million copies in its first six weeks. It also contributed to a 34 percent surge in sales of the Nintendo Switch.

In short, Nintendo knows how to make games that everyone wants to play.

You can also play some major third-party games on the Nintendo Switch like Doom, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Overwatch, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and Minecraft.

It also has a great collection of Indie games like Celeste, Stardew Valley, Katana Zero and they’re always adding new titles to their collection.

Games can be downloaded from the Nintendo E-Shop. It’s easy to navigate and constantly has games on sale. Games also come in physical game cards.

Online and Multiplayer gaming with Nintendo Online

If you want to play games like Mario Kart 8 or Minecraft online with your friends, you’ll need to sign up for Nintendo Online. There are perks like cloud storage and free Classic Nintendo games with your subscription.

Nintendo Online subscription is priced competitively for 1-month, 3-month, and 12-month options. It also has a family option that allows eight people to use it together.

However, you don’t need a membership for local multiplayer gaming. You can connect up to four Joy-Con controllers to a single Nintendo Switch console. You can also connect eight Nintendo Switch consoles together locally for major multiplayer gaming.

Extra features

The Nintendo Switch also has a lot of fun extra features.

You can use it to turn on your TV.

If you want to access games restricted to a region, you can change your location to access them.

You can pair your Joy-Cons with lots of other devices like your Android phone, your PC or your Mac. If you misplace your Joy-Cons they can also easily be tracked using the Switch console.

You can also use the Switch to voice-chat with your friends while playing certain games in multiplayer.

In Conclusion

With its versatility, innovative design and excellent game library it’s no surprise that the Nintendo Switch is one of the best-sold consoles currently on the market.

If you’re looking for portability, choose the Nintendo Switch. It’s the ideal console for the gamer on the go.

But if you’re looking for high performance and graphics, choose the Xbox or the PlayStation (you can find an article comparing the two here) instead.

  1. Thank you so much for this highly informative review! I love to play video games, and I can personally vouch for the greatness that is the Nintendo Switch. I love the greater variety of games, smoother game play, enhanced 3-D experience of the games/screen, and versatility of the machinery itself (as you mentioned, the tabletop mode, handheld mode, etc.). I’m also not surprised that the Switch is continuing to sell out in 2020; the people know what they want, and they’re going after it. Haha Great read! God bless you!

    1. I have always found that Nintendo never quite kept up with its competitors when it came to performance and screen quality, but they ALWAYS stay ahead with innovation and originality. The value of the systems was always superior as well, as they are always the cheapest option.

Thanks for reading and have a wonderful day!
